Chapter 11: The Other Lost Son
Chapter 11: The Other Lost Son
The elder son heard the music from the fields.
He had worked since dawn, as he did every day. Now, walking home as the sun set, he heard singing. Laughter. Celebration.
He grabbed a passing servant.
ELDER SON“What is this?”
SERVANT“Your brother has come home, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.”— Luke 15:27
The elder son's face hardened. He walked to the edge of the courtyard and stopped. Through the doorway, he saw the torches, the dancing, his brother wearing the finest robe in the house.
He could not make himself enter.
The father came outside and found him standing in the darkness.
FATHER“Come inside. Join us.”
Years of buried pain erupted.
ELDER SON“Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!”— Luke 15:29-30
This son of yours. Not my brother. The words revealed everything.
The father stepped closer. His voice was gentle. Patient.
FATHER“My son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.”— Luke 15:31
He gestured toward the glowing courtyard.
FATHER“But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”— Luke 15:32
The elder son said nothing.
The music played on.
The door remained open.
