Chapter 2: The Festival That Cut Her Deepest
Then came the pilgrimage that broke her.
That year, after the day's offering was finished, the family gathered for the meal as they always did. And when the time came to eat, Hannah could not lift a single bite to her mouth. She wept where she sat. The food in front of her went cold.
Elkanah, the husband who loved her, finally spoke.
ELKANAH“Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”— 1 Samuel 1:8
He meant well. He always did. In that culture, ten sons was the picture of a household perfectly blessed by the Lord, the highest measure of a man's joy as a father. Elkanah was asking Hannah, in the gentlest way he knew, whether his love alone could fill the empty space those sons would have filled. But love alone could not measure what she was carrying. So she gave him no answer at all.
The others around the table ate and drank, the way they did every year. And when everyone had eaten and drunk their fill, Hannah quietly rose from her place. She had something else to do.
